From my interactions with Chris Pacia /u/tcrypt, the important aspect of Avalanche preconsensus isn't that it prevents the attacker from getting his double spend mined, but rather that it provides fast notification to the merchant that he's been double spent.
So my question is really simple. Why this, and not a much simpler system of double spend relaying or notification which requires no changes to the protocol or consensus rules?
